On the redshift cut-off for steep-spectrum radio sources

چکیده
We use three samples (3CRR, 6CE and 6C*) selected at low radio frequency to constrain the cosmic evolution in the radio luminosity function (RLF) for the ‘most luminous’ steep-spectrum radio sources. Although intrinsically rare, such sources give the largest possible baseline in redshift for the complete flux-density-limited samples currently available. Using parametric models to describe the RLF which incorporate distributions in radio spectral shape and linear size as well as the usual luminosity and redshift, we find that the data are consistent with a constant comoving space density between z ∼ 2.5 and z ∼ 4.5. We find this model is favoured over a model with similar evolutionary behaviour to that of optically-selected quasars (i.e. a roughly Gaussian distribution in redshift) with a probability ratio of ∼ 25 : 1 and ∼ 100 : 1 for spatiallyflat cosmologies with ΩΛ = 0 and ΩΛ = 0.7 respectively. Within the uncertainties, this evolutionary behaviour may be reconciled with the shallow decline preferred for the comoving space density of flat-spectrum sources by Dunlop & Peacock (1990) and Jarvis & Rawlings (2000), in line with the expectations of Unified Schemes.

Searches for High Redshift Radio Galaxies
We have started a search for High Redshift Radio Galaxies (HZRGs) in an area covering 7 sr by selecting a sample of Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) sources with a low flux density cut-off S1400 > 10 mJy and a steep spectral index cut-off of α < −1.3 (S ∝ ν) from the WENSS, NVSS and TEXAS surveys. Our first results for 27 sources show that we are almost twice as effective in finding HZRGs than than s...
متن کاملOn the redshift cut-off for flat-spectrum radio sources
We use data from the Parkes Half-Jansky Flat-Spectrum (PHJFS) sample (Drinkwater et al. 1997) to constrain the cosmic evolution in the co-moving space density ρ of radio sources in the top decade of the flat-spectrum radio luminosity function (RLF). A consistent picture for the high-redshift evolution is achieved using both simple parametric models, which are the first to allow for distribution...
متن کاملThe 6C** sample of steep-spectrum radio sources: II – Redshift distribution and the space density of high-redshift radio galaxies
We use the 6C** sample to investigate the co-moving space density of powerful, steepspectrum radio sources. This sample, consisting of 68 objects, has virtually complete K-band photometry and spectroscopic redshifts for 32 per cent of the sources. In order to find its complete redshift distribution, we develop a method of redshift estimation based on the K − z diagram of the 3CRR, 6CE, 6C* and ...
متن کاملUltra Steep Spectrum radio sources in the Lockman Hole: SERVS identifications and redshift distribution at the faintest radio fluxes
Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) radio sources have been successfully used to select powerful radio sources at high redshifts (z & 2). Typically restricted to large-sky surveys and relatively bright radio flux densities, it has gradually become possible to extend the USS search to sub-mJy levels, thanks to the recent appearance of sensitive low-frequency radio facilities. Here a first detailed analys...
متن کاملNew High–Redshift Radio Galaxies from the MIT–Green Bank Catalog
We present optical identifications and redshifts for seventeen new high–redshift radio sources. Fifteen of these sources are radio galaxies; the remaining two are high–redshift, steep–spectrum, radio–loud quasars. These objects were discovered as part of an ongoing study of compact (θ < 10), moderately steep spectrum (α4.8 GHz 1.4 GHz > 0.75, Sν ∝ ν ) sources from the MIT – Green Bank (MG) radi...
